1. Feminism and intersectionality need to be eradicated. Feminism is a broad term and there are many subcategories but it is an idolization of womanhood. While early feminists were looking for equal rights, their ideology was rooted in an idolization of womanhood. All 3 waves of feminism sought to abolition God ordained differences between men and women in various ways.
Intersectionality believes society is riddled with oppression and seeks to essentially measure how oppressed people are. The lower you are on the scale, the more deserving you are of compassion and “empathy.” That’s why you can have a mob of people come to support a woman who killed her children instead of the father who found his children brutally murdered.
Many churches have bought into both of these ideologies and need to repent.
2. Sin needs to stop being psychologized. Lindsay Clancy didn’t need more psychologists or psychiatric drugs. She needed the gospel. She needed to know God and his Word. She had an abundance of doctors and an abundance of medication and still killed her children.
3. Moral culpability requires a knowledge of right and wrong. To be clear, I do think Lindsey Clancy knew what she was doing was wrong. She planned it out and one of the first things she did when she woke up in the hospital bed was ask for a lawyer. However, we do have to realize that God holds people accountable for their actions on the basis of their knowledge of right and wrong. Romans 1:18-32 makes it clear that people know what they are doing is wrong. Paul says in Romans 2:14 that Gentiles, those who don’t know God, have a law written on their heart that tells them right and wrong. The Bible seems to imply children aren’t held accountable for their actions in Deuteronomy 1:39 since they don’t have a knowledge of right and wrong. Which is why the children of those who were banned from entering the promised land could enter the promised land.
4. The government must still protect its citizens. The purpose of government is to reward good and punish evil (Romans 13). Someone who is insane when they commit a crime, meaning they genuinely do not know right from wrong, should not be held criminally responsible but that doesn’t mean they should be allowed back into society. Government has a duty to protect its citizens.
5. We must care for those around us. We can acknowledge that Lindsay Clancy should be held responsible for what she did and also have compassion on people who are struggling. There are people who genuinely are experiencing severe mental issues. Our call as believers is to love and minister to those people (Galatians 6:2, Romans 12:15, 1 Peter 3:8, 1 Thessalonians 5:14).
Cases like this remind us that we live in a Fallen world. The answer is not to comply with those who hate God and the answer isn’t to conquer our enemies.
The answer is Christ. We need to rightly call out and condemn sin while also faithfully and boldly proclaiming the remedy to sin, which is Christ.
